New Delhi: Chief Justice of India K G
Balakrishnan today expressed concern that law colleges across
the country were finding it difficult to attract motivated
young teachers as they are driven to more lucrative career
options.
Maintaining that this challenge needs to be overcome,
the CJI said there was a need to attract some of the best
among them to the teaching profession.
"While there is no doubt that today's law graduates
have many career-paths to choose from, we should devise
methods to attract some of the best among them to the teaching
line," Balakrishnan said at the second convocation of the
Indian Law Institute.
He said another set of factors that deserved attention
are the overall expectations from legal education.
Expressing similar sentiments, Law Minister M Veerappa
Moily said "dearth of faculty" in the law schools was one of
the issues which has limited the development of legal
education in the country.
"The system of legal education going forward will have
to be flexible inclusive and with the ability to maintain a
uniform standard in terms of quality of product," he said.
The Law Minister said education in law must be
imparted with a view to develop practical knowledge instead of
theoretical one.
