New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday remanded R
Vasudevan, the acting chairman of the Company Law Board, to
14 days of judicial custody in connection with a graft case to
the tune of Rs seven lakh.
Vasudevan, along with Manoj Banthia, the company
secretary of a leading vernacular daily, were produced before
the court on the expiry of their police remand.
Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini, however, allowed CBI
to quiz for one more day Banthia on the ground that a third
accused Ankur Chawla, a lawyer, joined the probe today.
CBI wanted to confront Chawla with the statements given
by Banthia during his custodial interrogation, the prosecutor
told the court.
Vasudevan had allegedly received illegal gratification
of Rs seven lakh at his residence from Banthia for passing a
favourable order in a petition involving the vernacular daily,
CBI had said.
The probe agency claimed it had recovered cash of Rs 55
lakh, including the alleged bribe amount of Rs 7 lakh, from
Vasudevan`s residence here.
CBI had registered a case under different sections of IPC
and the Prevention of Corruption Act against Vasudevan,
Banthia and Chawla after carrying out searches at seven
locations in Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
It had also recovered various documents during the
searches.
