Rameswaram: Coastal Security Director Ranbir Singh on Thursday visited various coastal areas including Mandapam, Thondi, Puduroad and Devipattinam in Ramanathapuram district and assessed security arrangements in these places.

Later he told a news agency that additional coastal security stations would be set up at Puduroad, Devipattinam and Thondi and at a place between Rameswaram and Nagapattinam.

His visit assumes significance in the wake of the High Court bench in Madurai last month directing the Centre and Coast Guard to provide adequate security, safety and protection to Indian fishermen and their property while exercising their fishing rights within Indian territorial waters.

The court had also directed the Centre to deploy sufficient number of Coast Guard vessels to ensure that Indian fishermen, particularly from Tamil Nadu, are not subjected to alleged atrocities by Sri Lankan Navy.
