New Delhi: Concern was voiced in Rajya Sabha on Thursday over atrocities on women, children and weaker sections and "politicising" of the issue by top leaders of various political parties.
Raising the issue of "politicising" of alleged gang-rape and conversion of a woman in Meerut district, KC Tyagi (JD-U) said a national leader had said that the democratically elected government in Uttar Pradesh be sacked even as three accused in the case have been arrested and SHO was suspended.
Tyagi said a Union minister had made similar demand to sack the UP government after the Badaun rape case though the accused were found innocent in lie detection and other tests and CBI, probing the issue, was in a fix.
He said after a similar rape case on July 31 another central leader had talked of sacking the UP government, adding, "Stringent punishment should be given to perpetrators of such crime. At the same time, all top political leaders irrespective of the party they belong to should refrain from politicising and complicating such issues."
Tyagi said even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that for four years his government will focus on development and in the 5th Year politics will be done but his party members have started indulging in politics.
He also suggested chemical castration for rape convicts.
Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien, who was in the Chair, remarked, "Action has to be taken against culprits. They have to be put behind bars."
Raising a related issue, TN Seema (CPI-M) said two girls, who were inmates of the Nirbhaya Shelter Home in Kerala, went missing and said it was a serious matter.
She said the man accused of abusing and sexually harassing girls was released on bail from prison before the girls went missing and the government should look into the safety of children in shelter homes.
She said as per National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) there were 932 cases of abuses and violations registered in child care institutions in 2013-14.
Seema demanded immediate safety measures for women and children including equipping all shelter homes and centres with CCTV besides other safety measures.
Satyanarayan Jatiya (BJP) said "justice delayed is justice denied" and hence government should initiate immediate steps to ensure speedy justice to them.
