New Delhi: Congress on Friday cautioned against "politicising" emotive issues and disapproved of Opposition PDP's statement saying it would support the resolution in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly seeking clemency for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

"The issue of capital punishment is extremely sensitive issue...we need to tread with utmost caution and not be giving statements, which create an impression as if we were trying to politicise something on which there is emotive and polarized opinion," party spokesperson Manish Tewari said reacting to a volley of questions on the issue.

He was asked to comment on People's Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti's statement in Srinagar in which she said, "We will support the resolution. We have been demanding clemency for Guru right from the time his death sentence was announced."

Mehbooba stressed that if the Assembly passes the resolution, it should not become an issue.

She said while the death sentence of Nalini, a convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was commuted to life imprisonment, a similar resolution has been passed by Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking clemency for three other convicts in the case.

The Assembly will debate on September 28 the resolution submitted by independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rashid.

Look who is talking. The party which has ruled India by getting voted to power on emotive issues only. Indira`s killing, Rajiv`s killing made issues to get in power. If you are the leader in fooling people of India, you can not stop others.
