Cong deliberately undermining parliamentary democracy: CPI

New Delhi: The CPI on Friday charged the
Congress with using the Telengana issue as a "ploy" to get Lok
Sabha adjourned abruptly, saying the party was "deliberately
undermining" parliamentary democracy.

"Congress is not only using undemocratic methods to
undermine Parliament, but also trying to make it irrelevant by
getting it adjourned ahead of schedule using the Telengana
issue as a ploy," CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said here.

Reacting to the adjournment of the House and getting
bills passed without debate, he said while individual MPs or
parties disrupting proceedings was a matter of concern, what
was of "greater concern is the government`s behaviour. They
are willing to make Parliament irrelevant."

He said Congress was "deliberately using" such issues to
create a pandemonium and avoid Parliament as it has to be
answerable on various issues like price rise, unemployment and
climate change.

Maintaining that the number of sittings of the House had
come down "drastically", Dasgupta said if the government was
"serious enough", it could have consulted all opposition
parties on the legislative business. "The bills, instead of
getting them passed without discussion, could have been again
referred to Select Committees."

In the same vein, RSP MP Prasanta Majumdar said if the
Congress party was bent upon making Parliament irrelevant, the
issue should be "taken to the people".

Opposition parties should boycott an entire session in
protest, he said referring to the 1972 boycott of the West
Bengal Assembly by RSP and CPI(M) to protest "similar
attempts" by the then Congress government there.
