New Delhi: Congress today hailed Manmohan
Singh as a "very effective and competent" Prime Minister,
dismissing reports of any differences between him and party
chief Sonia Gandhi on the issue of environment and
"There is no difference between the two... between what
the Prime Minister said and what the Congress President
said..the party line is striking a balance between environment
and development," party spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told
He said that the Prime Minister has been "very effective
and competent" and an international magazine has adjudged him
among one of the ten most competent leaders in the world.
His comments came in reply to questions whether Gandhi
has ticked off the Prime Minister in view of reports that she
set out to correct the Prime Minister`s course on land
acquisition and environment at a function here yesterday,
differing sharply with his policy prescriptions.
At the same time, Ahmed disagreed with the Prime
Minister`s statement that his government was more cohesive
than that of Pandit Nehru, insisting that all Congress
governments have worked well during their tenures and it would
not be fair to compare any two Congress governments.
