New Delhi: Congress, whose outside support
is crucial to survival of Karunanidhi government in Tamil
Nadu, is seeking to extract its pound of flesh in Rajya Sabha
elections next month by insisting on two seats from DMK in the
Hard bargaining is on between the two parties over the
issue with Congress contending that it needed more seats in
the Upper House given the fact that it was in a minority there
and wants to shore up its numbers, Congress sources said.
DMK already has four members in Rajya Sabha and Congress`
argument is that it was in dire need for more members and the
key ally should reciprocate its gesture in Tamil Nadu by
sacrificing two seats.
Biennial elections to Rajya Sabha for six seats in the
state will be held next month and the Congress High Command
has to decide the issue within a week.
Congress, which has a strength of 36 MLAs in 234-member
Tamil Nadu Assembly, could ensure the victory of only one
candidate on its own and wants DMK to give two seats.
