New Delhi: A meeting of the Congress Plenary
will be held here from December 18 to 20, the third such
conference since Sonia Gandhi took over as party chief way
back in 1998 and the first after her re-election for the
The significance of the Plenary this time was that it
will mark the completion of the 125 years of Congress, which
is the oldest political party in the country.
Under Gandhi`s stewardship, AICC Plenaries have been
held at Bangalore in 2001 and in Hyderabad in 2006.
The Delhi Plenary will be the first such meet of the
party after it came to power for the second time via UPA route
in the Lok Sabha elections last year.
Congress had plans to organise a series of regional
conferences during the year to celebrate the 125th anniversary
but had to drop the plans due to several reasons including
heavy rains in some parts of the country.
The announcement about Plenary session was made by AICC
General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi at the AICC meeting today.
This is the first Plenary session being held in North
India after nearly 30 years. The Centenary session of the
party was held at Mumbai in 1985.
