New Delhi: Congress on Monday refused to comment
on appeals to Sonia Gandhi to save the lives of three convicts
on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including
that from DMK chief M Karunanidhi.
"Congress party has no view either way. We are certainly
not commenting. It is a constitutional, legal and
administrative process," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told
reporters in reply to a volley of questions on the issue.
When pointed out that even DMK which is part of the UPA
has made the demand, Singhvi said, "DMK is not Congress".
Singhvi, a senior advocate, also evaded reply to a query
on whether the Congress favoured capital punishment. "I am not
going to answer".
A party leader, who declined to be identified, said that
there were several constitutional issues involved in the
matter given the fact that the mercy petitions of the three
have been rejected by the President.
