Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala will soon have the tallest national flagpost in the country to be installed by Delhi-based Flag Foundation of India in the state capital here.

The national flag made in a special fabric will fly 24-hours throughout the year at top of the 206 feet tall flagpost, which would have a decorated crest, Flag Foundation India CEO, Commander (Ret) KV Singh and Shashi Tharoor, MP, told reporters today.

Singh said necessary permission from the Union Home Ministry and state government had been obtained for installing the flagpost made of steel and weighing 12.5 tonnes at the Kannakakunnu palace.

The main objective behind installing such a flagpost was to create awareness about the national flag. The plan was to install the flagpost during Onam Festival in September, he said.

The flag itself would be of 48 feet width and 72 feet length and weigh about 27 kg, Singh said.

The Foundation, headed by industrialist Naveen Jindal, plans to have flagposts in other parts of the country also, Singh said, adding, on completion of work, the District Tourism Promotion Council would look after it.

The flagpost would be an added tourist attraction in the city, Tharoor said.
