Agartala: Communist Party of India (M-L)
Liberation today demanded withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), saying it had "suppressed the voice of
common man in areas of operation".

"We demand withdrawal of the black act AFSPA. It
suppressed the voice of common people in the areas where it
has been in operation," party general secretary Dipankar
Bhattacharya said.

He told reporters that this Act was invoked in Jammu
and Kashmir and North-Eastern states like Manipur, Assam and
Tripura in the name of containing insurgency or terrorism.

It has caused a lot of harassment for innocent people
and many rights groups have demanded its withdrawal, he said.

Bhattacharya said Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee
appointed by Centre has recommended for withdrawal of the Act
because it could not solve insurgency problem.
He came here to address the 8th state conference of
their party here which concluded yesterday.
