New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of criminal justice system in the country.
An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha said the pace was not satisfactory and added that criminal justice system needed to be fast-tracked so that cases can be decided expeditiously instead of lingering for years.
The court further asked the Centre to come out with a proposal on the same within a month.
The apex court said the creation of additional courts coupled with relative judicial infrastructure should be substantial and not just symbolic.
“I have my own limitations. I can`t set up new courts,” Chief Justice RM Lodha said while asking the Centre to improve judicial infrastructure after consulting state governments on the matter.
The court suggested a meeting of law secretaries and chief secretaries of all the states be convened for taking a comprehensive look at the problem to arrive at a concrete solution.
The court`s observation came in the course of hearing a petition filed by National Panthers Party chief Bhim Singh, who sought the release of Pakistani prisoners who have already completed their sentences but were still languishing in jail.
