New Delhi: Wives of CRPF personnel serving in far flung areas including naxal affected districts have achieved a remarkable feat by raising Rs 70 lakh in a pre-diwali 'mela' organised here.

The women, who have gathered here from across the country, made a hefty profit of Rs six lakh by selling handmade handicraft and household items.

The profit will now be used for welfare of the widows of slain CRPF troopers and to run AIDS and narcotics awareness programmes across the forces' units in the country.

The women sold items ranging from sofa-sets to carpets, crockery, wooden artifacts, spices and pickles which they made in their spare time with a touch of individuality of the region they hail from.

"We were determined to showcase our products and get a reasonable amount from their sale to use for welfare purposes. We made these items while our husbands are away on duty," Shanti Biswas, wife of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan posted in naxal affected Chhattisgarh, said.

The women work under the banner of the CRPF Wives Welfare Association and organised a three-day pre-diwali mela here which concluded today.

The women will now deposit the amount in a bank and use it for expenditure on various programmes.
