D L Kalhan elected as Indian Overseas Congress president

The IOC, UK, an organisation linked to the ruling Cong Party in India, has held a key election to its body. D L Kalhan has been elected as its President.

London, Sept 25: The Indian Overseas Congress, UK, an organisation linked to the ruling Congress Party in India, has held a key election to its body.
NRI Congress leaders, D L Kalhan and Sunil Chopra, have been elected President and General Secretary respectively of the Indian Overseas Congress, UK.

Kalhan, hitherto General Secretary of the organisation succeeds freedom fighter Balwant Kapoor, who died recently following a heart attack, aged 81.

Sunil Chopra, the new General Secretary of the organisation is a leading NRI entrepreneur. He was former President of National Students Union of India and former Vice President of Youth Congress, Delhi.

The election of the office bearers was preceded by a condolence meeting last evening at the Indian Gymkhana at Osterley where rich tributes were paid to Kapoor for his "patriotism, sincerity and commitment to the Congress organisation."

Veerendra Sharma, Labour MP, described Kapoor as a "fatherly figure" who worked for the unity of India even in adverse conditions.

Kapoor was imprisoned during the Quit India movement and was in Multan Jail.
