Mumbai: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Friday asked neurosurgeons and scientists to conduct advanced
research on human mind and emotions as one cannot ignore these
two factors while dealing with matters related to the brain.
"A holistic approach is required when you are dealing
with the brain as you cannot ignore human mind and emotions.
So the science behind these have to be researched using
advancement in science and technology," he said addressing
neurosurgeons and scientists from around the globe at Taj
Hotel here.
The Tibetan spiritual leader was speaking after
inaugurating the three-day convention of Acadamecia Eurasiana
Neurochirurgica--'Holistic approach to the realm of
Neurosurgery'.
"Thinking at emotional-level leads to many imbalances in
body metabolism resulting in diseases and in order to prevent
it was important for the scientists to expand the knowledge of
external as well as internal world," he said.
To have healthy mind, it is important to have healthy
body and "all of us have potential to kick the peaceful mind
through holistic approach," he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Scientific Advisor
to Government of India, R Chidambaram said the National Brain
Institute was planning a 'Brain Grid' where networking of all
institutions working on cerebral matter would be available.
"Since India has supercomputers, this should not be a
problem for having even neuro-informatics connectivity. Now
with the National Knowledge Network coming up with a very high
speed connection linking all the educational and research
institutions, the researchers can interact faster," he said.
Veteran neuro-surgeon Dr Madjid Samii, who is also
President, International Neuroscience Institute, Hannover,
Germany said the future of neuro-surgery is going to be brain
mapping and computer graphics and also the study of pain,
consciousness and ethics.
Neuro-monitoring of a single cell is another area of
research, he said.
He also said that the advancement in technology is
becoming expensive, creating two classes of patients although
everyone has to get the same type of treatment ethically.
Samii urged technologists should not only push for
high-tech methods with recent advancements, but also develop
simple inexpensive setup with basic standards and develop
affordable technologies so that the best treatment is given to
all patients.
The event -- the 16th Convention of the Academicia
Eurosiana Neurochirurgica -- was being organised for the first
time in India, Dr Keki Torel, Head, Neurosurgeon of Bombay
Hospital said.
Sixty speakers from 20 countries are participating in
the convention.
