2:55 pm: Shinde welcomes verdict
Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has welcomed awarding of death sentence to the four convicts in the Delhi gang-rape case.
Crediting his government for the tough anti-rape laws brought in after the incident, Shinde said justice has been done to the family of the victim.
He added the judgement will send out a loud message.
2:45 pm: Prosecution happy
The prosecution lawyer expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying he and Nirbhaya’s family are happy.
He said the family particularly wants to thank the media for their support.
2:40 pm: Justice has been done, says Nirbhaya’s father
The gang-rape victim’s father has described the verdict as satisfactory. He told Zee News, “Justice has been done. I am very happy today.”
The family had earlier demanded death sentences for the four convicts.
2:35 pm: Defence not satisfied
The defence lawyer says he is not satisfied with the verdict and will consider appealing in a higher court.
2:30 pm: All four convicts get death
A fast-track court in Delhi on Friday awarded death sentence to the four convicts in the Delhi gang-rape case.
Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh will hang for their involvement in the rape and murder, judge Yogesh Khanna ruled.
The court had convicted the four on Tuesday.
All four started crying after the sentences were pronounced, sources said.
1:30 pm: Convicts brought to court
All four convicts in the Delhi gang-rape case - Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh – have been brought to the Saket court from the Tihar Jail.
The court will today award sentences to the four in connection with the case.
10:15 am: My daughter will get justice today, says Nirbhaya’s mother
As the countdown for handing down of sentences to the four convicted in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape began, the victim’s mother said her daughter will today get justice.
Nirbhaya’s mother, however, added that only death sentence to the four accused will serve as justice for her daughter.
Nirbhaya’s father and brother have also demanded death for the four.
10:00 am: Give my son a second chance, pleads convict’s mother
With the court set to hand down sentences to the four convicts in the Delhi gang-rape case, the mother of Vinay Sharma has pleaded for leniency for her son.
“They are hard workers. Not one complaint against them. The judge should give them a second chance to reform themselves. Even God gives every person a second chance,” she was quoted as saying by a news agency.
9:00 am: Security tightened outside Saket court
The Delhi Police have set up barricades around the fast-track court in Saket which will announce the quantum of punishment in the Delhi gang-rape case today.
People have started gathering at the court complex since morning in anticipation of the sentencing.
8:00 am: Quantum of punishment to be pronounced today
A fast-track court will on Friday pronounce the quantum of punishment to be awarded to the four accused in the December 16 Delhi gang-rape case.
The court had on Tuesday convicted the four accused - Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh – on all 13 charges, including rape and murder, filed against them.

After hearing the arguments for sentencing on Wednesday, Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna had reserved the pronouncement of quantum of punishment till 2:30 pm today (Friday).
