Delhi Police acting as per law in Justice Ganguly case: Bassi

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said police are "acting per law" in connection of sexual harassment case of law intern in which retired Justice AK Ganguly has been indicted by an apex court panel.

New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi on Friday said the police are "acting per law" in connection of the alleged sexual harassment case of a woman law intern in which retired Justice A K Ganguly has been indicted by an apex court panel.
"As far as Delhi police is concerned, whatever is required under the law is being done and will be done," Bassi told a news channel.

Asked about parallels being drawn with the Tehelka case in which the Goa police took suo motu cognizance and registered an FIR and later arrested the magazine`s founder-editor Tarun Tejpal, Bassi said Delhi police have been acting per law. "Whatever is required under the law is being done," he said.

Questioned whether he or his force is under some kind of pressure as it is a high profile case, he said "as far as I am concerned, I am extremely focused. My focus is law of the land and as per law we have been acting and as per law we will act."

The Delhi police had sent an email to the woman intern in the first week of December requesting her to record her statement in the case but she has not come forward so far.

A committee of three judges of the Supreme Court had earlier indicted Justice Ganguly for "unwelcome behaviour" and "conduct of sexual nature" towards the intern, prompting demands that action under criminal law should be initiated against him.

There has been a growing demand that Justice Ganguly also resign as the chief of West Bengal Human Rights Commission.
