New Delhi: Reacting sharply to the barbaric incident of rape of a five-year-old girl in Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi on Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has tweeted that he is deeply disturbed and hurt by the incident.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tweeted, “I am deeply disturbed to hear news of the shameful incident in which a 5 year-old child in Delhi was sexually abused and is now in hospital.”
The victim was kidnapped, starved, tortured and brutally raped for two days and was found in a critical condition today even as police hunted for the 25-year-old accused.
However, the traumatised girl was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for better treatment from Swami Dayanand Hospital where she was admitted earlier.
Meanwhile, as news of the brutality came to light, angry protesters, which also included workers of the Aam Aadmi Party, massed at the Gandhi Nagar Police station and at the hospital where she was admitted since Wednesday morning after her family rescued her from the house of her abductor in Gandhi Nagar.
Sharing the widespread outrage over the rape incident, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described it as “very upsetting” incident and directed Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to ensure such cases do not recur.
The PM reiterated "the need for society to look deep within and work to root out the evil of rape and other such crimes from our midst".
“All possible appropriate medical care should be provided to the young victim of the sexual assault,” the PM said to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
While talking to the Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna, the PM said that there is a need to take the strictest possible action against the erring officials also.
Taking note of the incident when a Delhi Police ACP slapped a girl who was protesting for the rape victim, the PM said, “Treatment meted out by police officers to some women protesting against this incident is ‘completely unacceptable’.”
As per reports, the Prime Minister has also seen the visuals of the unacceptable treatment meted out by police officers to some women protesting against this incident.
