New Delhi: The capital on Thursday sizzled at the season's highest of 42 degree celsius and the weatherman predicted no relief for the next couple of days.

The maximum was recorded at 42.3 degree Celsius, six degrees above normal, as against yesterday's 41.2 degrees, the MeT Department said.

The minimum was recorded at 23.6 degrees, four degrees above the usual.

The Weatherman predicted no relief as the maximum and minimum temperatures were expected to be around 43 and 24 degrees respectively in the next two days.

The humidity levels were, however, low in the city at a maximum of 46 per cent and low of 17 per cent.

Last year, the maximum temperature in April had touched 43.5 degrees which was the second highest in the last 65 years. The all-time record for April was on the 29th day in 1941 when the mercury touched 45.6 degree Celsius.

April began on a 'hot note' this year with the temperature touching higher levels. The mean temperature for the month of April is 36.2 degree Celsius (maximum) and 21.5 degrees (minimum).

The maximum crossed the 40 degree mark two days ago when it touched 40.1 degree Celsius.

The mercury had touched 39.2 degree Celsius on March 21 this year which was the second highest maximum temperature in the month of March in the past 65 years.

We can use this heat for good. India gets about 1800 kWh solar thermal energy per square meter per year. If every Indian uses heat we get on one square meter energy availability will theoretically double or increase by 2100 billion kWh/ year. Indian government should do everything to increase use of small solar thermal equipment and skylights. GOI should allow 100 % depreciation on their use, abolish all taxes on these and issue long term infrastructure tax free bonds for their factory.
