Delhi students to protest against caste-based census

Students from various universities in the capital would hold a protest at Jantar Mantar July 4 against the ongoing issue of caste-based census and instead seek a census based on financial status of people.

New Delhi: Students from various universities in the capital would hold a protest at Jantar Mantar July 4 against the ongoing issue of caste-based census and instead seek a census based on financial status of people.

Students from the Delhi University, Delhi Technological University and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have started a movement `Meri Jaati Hindustani` to protest caste-based census.

"We want the census to be based on financial status rather than caste as it will give a figure of people living below poverty line. We will also submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister`s Office," said Surendra Tyagi, a member of the movement.

The group is working closely with `Sabal Bharat`, another group with the same cause. It consists of former civil servants, politicians, scientists, artists, industrialists and journalists.

"We will use online petition and other modes to mobilise public opinion against the highly divisive move," said JC Sharma, former secretary in the external affairs ministry and a member of Sabal Bharat.
