Dialogue only way, but Pak must check terror: PM

Dialogue only way, but Pak must check terror: PM New Delhi: Contending that dialogue was the only way forward with Pakistan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said the decision to hold foreign-secretary level talks was a "calculated" one but there can be no meaningful discussion till terror from there is ended.

Denying that he had sought mediation by Saudi Arabia, he asserted in the Lok Sabha that all problems with Pakistan can be resolved bilaterally if it adopted a "reasonable" attitude in dealing with terror elements which target India.

"Our policy towards Pakistan is consistent, cautious and realistic," Singh said replying to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address to Parliament during which he lambasted the opposition BJP for spreading disinformation.

He specifically rebutted charges levelled by senior BJP leader L K Advani that the government was talking to Pakistan under US pressure.

Underlining the need for keeping communication channels with Pakistan from breaking down, he said the scope of any "miscalculation can only worsen in an environment of no contact."

To buttress his point, he said the US and the erstwhile Soviet Union, even at the height of the Cold War had kept communication channels open.

Referring to the recent Foreign Secretary-level talks, Singh said it was not a "sudden" decision but a "calculated" one. He pointed out that he had earlier offered to resume talks on humanitarian issues.

While I may agree with our respected PM that talking to Pakistan is a ``calculated`` move, I wish to suggest that the only talking points with Pakistan is that country has to vacate the so-called POK, which is part of our J&K state. We must not be shy or demure about it. The LOA can not and must not be allowed to become an international border. Why must we give away our territory to Pakistan? Second point of discussion is the attacks by terrorists from Pakistan. We must tell Pakistan and the rest of the world that any future attack will DEFINITELY be met with all our forces. No ambiguity about our resolve and the communication.

Yes there is NO alternative to talking. BUT FIRST OF ALL PAKISTAN MUST STOP TERROR AGAINST INDIA AND MUST ELIMINATE THE TERROR INFRASTRUCTURE FROM THE TERRITORY OF PAKISTAN BEFORE THE PEACE DIALOGUE SHOULD RESUME.

As long as Mullahs and Military are in control of Pakistan, when can talk till one loses ones tongue, but one will get absolutely nothing from them. PM is wasting his time. Mullahs and Paki Military only have respect for those who are tough to them. For only the fear that they might lose their power can motivate them to some changes. India talked to Pakistan and in return was immediately rewarded with the Kabul bombing. That`s Pakistan!!
