New Delhi: BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s brainchild `Run for Unity` marathon didn’t go down too well with Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh who hit out at the Gujarat Chief Minister on Sunday. Digvijay in his tweets said it was ironical that one who ‘divided’ in the past, was now organising a run for ‘unity’. He tweeted, “What an Irony! Who organised DEMOLITION OF BABRI MASJI who allowed INNOCENT TO BE KILLED IN 2002 who HONOURED ACCUSED OF MUZZAFARNAGAR RIOTS (sic).” It followed it up with, “who DIVIDED THE BODY POLITIC OF INDIA is organising UNITY RUN in memory of SARDAR PATEL who charged RSS of COMMUNALISING INDIA !(sic)” He also dragged the RSS-Gandhi into his tirade. “Which led to Assassination of MAHATMA GANDHI (sic).” Modi on Sunday flagged off `Run for Unity` marathon in Vadodara to mark the death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Hailing Sardar Patel, Modi said it was him who had save the country from getting disintegrated. “Gujarat has been able to march forward only because of unity,” he said. The event is an effort to collect scrap iron to build India’s first Home Minister Sardar Patel`s 182-metre statue in the middle of Narmada river, which is scheduled to be completed before January 26, 2014. This statue, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 2,074 crore, will be twice the size of the Statue of Liberty in the United States.
