Bangalore: Seed industry body NSAI today
asked the government to take a decision on commercial
cultivation of Bt Brinjal based on science and not "politics".
"It should be science-based, not politics-based,"
National Seed Association of India (NSAI) President Uday Singh
told PTI when asked about association's opinion on commercial
cultivation of Bt Brinjal.
"We believe in government of India and the regulatory
system of the government," Singh said.
Singh said the NSAI believes in the regulatory system
that has a panel of scientists.
".. let them take a decision. I am not in favour of
politicising it," he said.
In case there are "still some doubts" over Bt Brijnal and
if some people still feel that "scientific data" is not clear,
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh can always ask for more
trials, said Singh.
"But it's science which should prevail," he added.
A statement issued by NSAI on the occasion of Indian Seed
Congress here said that the Indian seed industry needs policy
support with regard to streamlining of regulatory processes to
accelerate the development and introduction of new genetically
modified technology, among others.
