Electoral roll details through SMS

Chennai Corporation, in collaboration with mobile service provider Airtel on Tuesday launched a special programme for voters to help people know their electoral roll details through Short Messaging Service (SMS).

New Delhi: Chennai Corporation, in collaboration with mobile service provider Airtel on Tuesday launched a special programme for voters, claimed to be the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, to help people know their electoral roll details through Short Messaging Service (SMS).

Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla inaugurated the scheme.

“Under the scheme, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, registered voters can send an SMS through mobile phones to access key details by typing ‘Vote’ followed by their EPIC number (Voter’s ID card number) and send it to 51913,” Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakoni said.

The voter would immediately receive details of his name, that of his father, the constituency, serial number and polling booths where he should vote.

For those unable to get the information even after sending an SMS, it meant their names were not available in the list.

In such cases, voters would have to contact the electoral registration officers concerned in Chennai Corporation zonal office to get their names included in the rolls, he said.

Currently, the service is available only for voters who are residing within the city limits.
