Kolkata: Noting India`s current situation has some similarities to the 1970s which led the then Indira Gandhi regime to impose an emergency, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday assured that there will be no repetition of this in the country.
"The situation is not exactly same but there are some similarities. In 1971 and 1972 the opposition front was crushed by the landslide victory of Congress. Then there was a world crisis and droughts. Some people tried to flare up a movement.... But I can assure you that there will be no repetition of emergency in the country," said Mukherjee while talking to reporters here.
A 21-month period of Emergency from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977 was imposed in India, which gave the government the right to suspend civil rights. This emergency period is considered one the most controversial times of India and has taken its place in the black pages of the country`s history.
