‘Ex-MPs overstaying in official accommodation to be evicted’

Amid complaints of new MPs and ministers about not getting possession of their allotted houses, the Centre on Saturday said official accommodations occupied by former parliamentarians will be vacated in a month.

New Delhi: Amid complaints of new MPs and
ministers about not getting possession of their allotted houses, the
Centre on Saturday said official accommodations occupied by former
parliamentarians will be vacated in a month and illegal
occupants evicted.

"In the next one month, all such houses will be
vacated. All (illegal occupants) will be evicted. Those who
were earlier ministers and MPs will vacate their houses,"
Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said on the
sidelines of a function here.

Asked why the Ministry has not got the houses vacated
even after six months, Reddy said, "The former MPs and
ministers are vacating their houses. Some of them had got stay
orders (from court)."

He said the Ministry had allotted bungalows to all
ministers and some of the houses were being renovated.

To a query, he said "strict action" will be taken
against the illegal occupants.

Reddy refused to reply to a question on the trend of
ministers staying in five-star hotels but said eviction will
take place in case of former ministers and MPs overstaying in
their official accommodation.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has already called for a joint
meeting of the Urban Development Ministry and the Lok Sabha
Housing Committee Chairman to sort out the issue.
