New Delhi: A Congress member on Wednesday said FDI in retail was in the interest of the nation at a time when Rs one lakh crore worth of fruits and vegetables perish for want of cold storages despite the government deciding to keep under suspension the decision.

K S Rao said in the Lok Sabha that since the UPA was not a single party government, it had to keep the decision on hold. This was in apparent reference to the opposition by Trinamool Congress and the DMK on the issue.

He said that Parliament was meeting after nine days of uproar by opposition on the issue and wanted leaders of the opposition parties to evolve a code of procedure for the conduct of the House.

Rao said if a student does not attend a certain number of classes he is not allowed to appear for examination and the same needed to be applied in Parliament. Government has to bring a regulation in this regard, he suggested.

The duty of MPs was to evolve laws which motivate people to work. Rao was participating in the discussion on Supplementary Demands for Grants (General).

Where was Rao all these years? Was he not aware of the fruits perishing? Only when the Gandhi family came out with FDI in retail, for obvious reasons, all these Congress Chamchas have woken up with one reason on the other.
