Kolkata: Nearly a month after the West Bengal
government announced a rehabilitation package for ultras who
give up arms, a Maoist today surrendered before police in
West Midnapore district.

"Shobhan Karak alias Bijoy, a Maoist squad member,
surrendered with arms at the district Police Lines,"
Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Verma told PTI.

Bijoy was a resident of Goyaltore in the district, he
said.
"We will make a fixed deposit of 1.5 lakh in his name for
three years and refer the case to rehabilitation committee,"
Verma said.

Once the rehabilitation committee cleared the case, the
Maoist would get a monthly remuneration of Rs 2000 per month
for three years and vocational training of his choice, he
said.

"In the next seven to ten day we hope many more Maoists
will surrender," he added.
