Flood alert in Delhi after rains; 9 killed in UP

Delhi Government on Friday issued flood alerts and asked concerned authorities to evacuate people from low-lying areas in the wake of incessant rains in the city.

flood alerts and asked concerned authorities to evacuate
people from low-lying areas in the wake of incessant rains in
the city.

The decision to issue flood alert was taken at a
high-level meeting to review the situation arising out of the
continuous rain which has resulted in flood-like situation in
many low-lying areas.
The flood control department has been asked to make
necessary arrangements to evacuate people from the areas
adjacent to the Yamuna river and other low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, nine persons were killed and
several others injured as heavy rains lashed Uttar Pradesh,
disrupting normal life, official sources said today.

While three persons died in Balrampur district, two
persons died in state capital Lucknow and one death each was
reported from Sultanpur, Sitapur, Maharajganj and Behraich
districts due to incidents of wall collapse and falling of
trees, they said.

The maximum of 208.3 mm rainfall was recorded in
Hassanganj in Unnao district, whereas Kanpur recorded 208 mm
in showers, the officials said.

"Kanpur and its adjacent areas received heavy showers
in the last 24 hours. While 178.4 mm rain was recorded in
Chakeri, the city received 105 mm rain," they said.
Lucknow recorded 70 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

As a result of the heavy rains, water levels have
risen in major rivers, including the Ganga and the Yamuna.

The Central Water Commission said the Ganga was rising
at Gumtia (Kannauj), Ankinghat, Kanpur, Dalmau, Chattnag,
Varanasi, Ghazipur and Ballia.

The Yamuna was flowing at the danger mark in Mawi,
which received 74.2 mm rainfall and rising at Mohana, Etawah,
Auraiya, Kalpi, Hamirpur and Chillaghat in Bada district.

The Commission said the Gomti was rising in Sultanpur
which received 22.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The Met office said 83.2 mm rainfall was recorded in
Chillaghat, 80 mm in Hamirpur, 49.2 mm in Auraiya and 50 mm in
Etawah.

It said that Elgin Bridge in Ayodhya received 85 mm
rainfall in the last 24 hours, causing the Ghagra to swell.
