Chandigarh: Heavy fog affected normal life
in Punjab and Haryana for the second consecutive day on Tuesday,
hitting road, rail and air traffic as cold wave sweeping the
two states further intensified.

Amritsar in Punjab and Union Territory Chandigarh
recorded the season`s coldest night so far, recording
respective minimums of 0.8 degrees Celsius and 4 deg C, three
degrees below normal each, the Met said here.

Zero visibility prevailed at many places in the region
early today as fog engulfed several places in the two states
including Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Rohtak, Bhiwani,
Kurukshetra and Karnal.

Normal movement of road traffic was affected at many
places across Punjab and Haryana. There was a massive traffic
jam near Pipli in Kurukshetra today as vehicles moved at
snail`s pace due to fog. Several trains in the region were
reported running late due to fog.

Yesterday, only four out of 11 flights landed at the
Chandigarh airport while the remaining were cancelled due to
bad weather at Delhi.

An airport official here said the situation looked grim
today as well.

Punjab, with Ludhiana shivering at a minimum of 1.5 deg C,
five below normal, while Patiala registered a low of 4.5 deg
C, down one notch.
