New Delhi: The main opposition BJP on Wednesday rejected UPA’s charge that it backtracked after supporting constitutional status for Lokpal in the Standing Committee and played a crucial role in its defeat in the Lok Sabha yesterday.
Addressing a press conference here, Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said, “The government failed to get a simple majority of 27 3 in the Lok Sabha let alone securing a special majority required for the passage of Constitutional Amendment Bill that was defeated in the Lower House yesterday."
Hitting back on Sonia Gandhi’s comment that the BJP’s real face was exposed when it opposed the Constitutional Amendment Bill yesterday, Swaraj said, “The Congress government first failed to get the required number and is now blaming us (BJP) for its defeat. The ruling alliance should know that the Constitutional Amendment Bill was defeated because of its arrogant attitude.”
Taking a dig at UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the BJP leader said, “The Congress party is now embarrassed as its dream to give a constitutional status to the Lokpal did not materialise because of its poor floor management. There was a complete lack of coordination between the Congress and major UPA alliance partners. They staged a walk out and opposed the government`s draft of the Lokpal and its provisions.”
Making a mockery of Congress’ propaganda that giving a constitutional status to the Lokpal was Rahul Gandhi’s dream, Swaraj asked, “Is it BJP’s job to fulfill Congress general secretary’s dream. The Congress government should have secured adequate majority if it were so serious in turning Rahul Gandhi’s dream into a reality.”
The counter-reaction from the Opposition leader came hours after Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul blamed BJP for the defeat of the Constitutional Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha yesterday.
Speaking to reporters, Sonia today said, “The BJP backtracked after supporting constitutional status for Lokpal in the Standing Committee and with this the real face of the party has come to the fore.”
Separately, Rahul also lashed out at the main opposition party saying, “Opposition members only gave big speeches and indulged in drama. The Opposition backtracked when it was time to press the button (vote for Constitution Amendment).”
