New Delhi: BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday released a book on former Congress leader and Dalit leader Jagjivan Ram and said the move should not be seen an his party`s attempt to win confidence of Scheduled Castes and backward classes in the country.
The book "Rashtranisht Babuji" has been authored by BJP leader and former Union Minister in NDA government Sanjay Paswan.
On whether BJP is attempting to win the confidence of Dalits in the country by releasing a book on a Congress leader and a Dalit icon, Gadkari said "no. Please don`t see this with any political angle."
Stating that the legacy of Jagjivan Ram is respected by all political parties, Gadkari said "Babu Jagjivan Ram was a big leader and someone had written about him. It is a good thing. Everyone should read this and whoever wants to endorse, it is good.."
Earlier addressing the gathering, Gadkari praised Jagjivan Ram as the leader who was not swayed by caste politics.
"We have given a caste-based identity to all our leaders. We consider Bhimrao Ambedkar a Dalit leader, we identify Chhatrapti Shivaji as a Maratha leader and Bal Gangadhar Tilak as a Brahmin leader. But Babu Jagjivan Ram was accepted across all castes and parties. He was a freedom fighter," he said.
The BJP president also rued the consideration of caste factors while distributing election tickets in some states.
"I hate such caste considerations. But while distributing tickets in Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, people considering caste and community are considered progressive in thoughts. All the decisions are taken on basis of caste," he said.
