Gopal Subramanium is new Solicitor General

Senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, who articulated the previous UPA government`s view in several crucial cases including the controversial Sethusamudram project, was on Monday appointed as the Solicitor General.

Subramanium, who articulated the previous UPA government`s
view in several crucial cases including the controversial
Sethusamudram project, was on Monday appointed as the Solicitor
General.

Subramanium, 51, who was the Additional Solicitor
General, succeeds Goolam E Vahanvati who has taken over as
Attorney General in place of Milon K Banerji.

The Law Ministry had earlier received Subramanium`s
consent for the post of Solicitor General.

Subramanium, who along with Vahanvati represented the
Centre in cases like OBC quota in central educational
institutions, sealing of commercial buildings in residential
areas of the national capital and several matters of
constitutional importance, was the frontrunner for the post of
Solicitor General.

He had also assisted the apex court as amicus curaie
in many cases including the fake encounter case in which
Gujarat police killed an alleged gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh
and his wife Kauser Bi.

Subramanium also appeared in the Delhi High Court and
the apex court as the Special Public Prosecutor in Parliament
attack case in which the trial court`s verdict of awarding
death sentence to Mohd Afzal was upheld.
