New Delhi: The government is considering a
proposal to give reservation to Muslims in government jobs and
education, and recommendations made by the Minority Commission
in this regard are under inter-ministerial consultations, the
Rajya Sabha was on Wednesday informed.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Minority
Affairs Vincent Pala said the National Commission for
Religious and Linguistics Minorities has given two alternative
recommendations for providing reservation to Muslims.
"It has recommended 15 per cent reservation for
minorities of which 10 per cent will be for Muslims. As an
alternative, the Commission has recommended that out of the 27
per cent OBC quota, 8.4 per cent sub quota be marked for
minorities of which six percent could be for Muslims," Pala
said.
Noting that no time limit has been fixed to take a final
decision on the proposal, he said, "The recommendation is
currently in the domain of inter-ministerial consultation."
Replying to a question on status of Multi-Sectoral
Development Program in 90 minority concentration districts of
20 states, he said Rs 3780 crore has been sanctioned for it in
the 11th Five Year Plan.
"Under this program, district plans worth Rs 3340.19
crore have been approved. An amount of Rs 2359.39 crore of
central assistance has been released to the states based on
detailed project report submitted to the ministry," he said.
He denied that there is any proposal to increase the
number of minority concentration district under the programme
in the 11th Five Year Plan.
