New Delhi: Under pressure from the Opposition, the Congress-led UPA government on Wednesday formed a joint panel of different investigating agencies to probe the 2G spectrum allocation scam.
The Finance Ministry announced the move today and said the panel will draw members from the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, as well as from the CAG.
The team will investigate the chain of events that took place between 2001 and 2008. It will also scan the audit books of all telecom companies which got 2G licences. Notably, reports have indicated collusion between politicians and industrialists in irregularities in the 2G spectrum allocation.
The 2G spectrums were allocated to different telecom companies in the year 2008, in which the government auditor CAG said, the exchequer lost a whopping Rs 1.76 lakh crore.
Former telecom minister A Raja has already resigned from his post under pressure from the Opposition.
The Opposition is however not letting the Parliament function demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the issue.
