New Delhi: The government on Tuesday hailed the role of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in helping conduct peaceful elections in disturbed areas and building confidence among masses to pave the way for development works in Maoist-affected states.

"The force has played a crucial role in conducting peaceful polls, especially in disturbed areas. Through civic action programmes, CRPF is building confidence among people in Left Wing Extremist areas so that development projects can be taken up there," Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh said after inaugurating the force's 72nd Anniversary at Kadarpur in Gurgaon.

Singh said no force can succeed and become elite without innovative training.

He announced that canteen facilities to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) will be provided at subsidised rates. Besides, provisions will be made for additional medical facilities for the personnel.

CRPF Director General K Vijay Kumar said the force was giving more emphasis on training, and new specialised training schools are coming up. He also sought more allowances for the personnel serving in LWE areas.

An impressive parade was organised on the occasion which was attended by senior CRPF officials among others.

Eight personnel each of the force were awarded President's Police Medal for Gallantry and President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

About three lakh CRPF jawans are entrusted with anti- Naxal, counter-insurgency, anti-riots and other internal security related duties across the country.

A trophy for "Innovation in Training" was presented to CIAT (Counter Insurgency and Anti-Terrorist ) School, Silchar, Assam.
