New Delhi: The government not taken a view
on the entry of foreign legal firms in the country, Law
Minister M Veerappa Moily said today, asking the Indian legal
fraternity to "build itself" on the lines of the IT sector to
reap rich dividends.

"We have not taken any decision yet on the entry of
legal firms from outside," Moily told reporters here.

He said before taking any call on the issue, the Law
Ministry will consult the Bar Council of India and the legal
fraternity. "No decision will be taken before taking the legal
fraternity into confidence," he added.

He was asked whether the government has set any
timeline to take a final decision.

The Law Minister suggested that the Indian legal
fraternity should be build to "capture the entire legal world"
on the lines of the IT industry.

"We are now an island of excellence...we should become
an ocean of excellence," he said, adding that the government
was mulling opening four `legal schools of excellence` in four
regions of the country.

The places have not yet been decided.

He said that "merely" setting up new legal schools
will not help and there was a need to build faculty also which
would carry out research in the legal arena.
