New Delhi: With the spurt in `honour
killings` in several parts of the country, the government is
planning to constitute a committee of women experts soon to
find out the reasons behind it and take remedial measures.
Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said
she has discussed the issue of sudden spurt of `honour
killings` with Home Minister P Chidambaram today.
"I discussed the issue with the Home Minister. But the
issue is why honour killings take place. It is a social evil
and I am in favour of a study on it. I will constitute a
committee to find out the reasons behind the honour killings.
Let`s the report come, then we will see what can be done," she
told reporters after the meeting with Chidambaram.
Asked about the proposed anti-honour killing bill,
Tirath said she wholeheartedly supports the legislation that
is expected to help in curbing the menace.
Government is expected to bring a bill in the Monsoon
Session of Parliament to provide for deterrent punishment for
so-called honour killings.
"We have already finalised a draft and the bill should
come in the next session," Law Minister M Veerappa Moily had
said last month.
The bill envisages amendments to several related acts,
including the Evidence Act, and the onus would be on the
accused to prove their innocence.
Several cases of killing of young men and women allegedly
by their relatives -- to protect "honour" after they got
married against the wishes of their families -- have come to
the fore in different parts of the country recently.
