New Delhi: The Gujarat High Court
today adjounred the hearing on the killing of teenaged college
student Ishrat Jahan in an alleged fake encounter with the
state police till December 15 after the Superme Court order
staying the proceedings of the case in the High Court.
Since The Supreme Court has stayed the proceedings in
the high court based on application of Ishrat`s mother Shamima
Kausar, Justice K S Jhaveri adjourned the case till December
The three-member committee appointed by the HC to
investigate the 2004 encounter killing case of Ishrat and
three others submitted the progress report of the work done by
them and sought extension of time to complete the probe.
In September, a judicial inquiry by magistrate S P
Tamang had said the encounter in which Ishrat and three others
were killed was fake and executed in cold blood by police
officials for personal benefit.
Tamang`s report was later stayed by the Gujarat High
Court on a petition the state government. The high court had
observed that the report was beyond jurisdiction of Tamang.
In August this year, the high court, on a petition by
Ishrat`s mother, had formed a three-member committee headed by
an officer of the rank of Additional Director General of
Police (ADGP) to further investigate the encounter killing of
Ishrat, Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad
Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani
on June 15, 2004.
