Guj issue clouds Parl towards Monsoon session end

BJP Leader S S Ahluwalia and V Maitreyan (AIADMK), were seen having a heated argument over a government motion for filling up vacancies to the JPC.

New Delhi: The appointment of Gujarat Lokayukta stalled Parliament for the fourth day on Tuesday, with an agitated BJP unrelenting on its demand for recall of Governor Kamla Beniwal.

With the 6-week long Monsoon session reaching its fag end, SP demanded dismissal of the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh, while TDP sought a fair deal for farmers.

The BJP has been getting support on the Gujarat issue from NDA allies besides several opposition parties like the Left and AIADMK as evident in the Rajya Sabha in the past two days.

Vociferous protests by BJP were witnessed both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on the issue.

In the Rajya Sabha, no substantive business could be done. However, in the Lower House a Constitution Amendment Bill for changing the name of Orissa to `Odisha` was passed.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day at 12:20 pm, when it re-assembled after stalling of the Question Hour, while the Upper House saw final adjournment at 2 pm after a couple of adjournments earlier.

In the Lok Sabha, BJP members trooped into the well demanding recall of the Governor for her controversial appointment of the Lokayukta "violating" the Constitution by not consulting the Narendra Modi government.

They shouted slogans like `Stop murder of democracy in Gujarat`.

SP members led by Akhilesh Yadav also rushed into the well demanding dismissal of the Mayawati government accusing it of indulging in "widespread corruption". They shouted slogans, referring to WikiLeaks on Mayawati.

The Speaker tried to proceed with the Question Hour but nothing was heard in the din. She then adjourned the House till noon.

When the Lok Sabha reassembled, Kumar adjourned it for the day in what appeared to be an understanding between the government and the Opposition.

In fact, some of the members were surprised, this time around, as there was no uproar on any issue.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP supported by AIADMK, also sought to corner the government over a motion on filling up of vacancies in the Joint Parliamentary Committee on spectrum allocation, on a technical ground.

BJP Deputy Leader S S Ahluwalia and V Maitreyan (AIADMK), were seen having a heated argument with the Chair over a government motion for filling up vacancies to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on spectrum allocation.

Ahluwalia insisted that instead of a single motion for filling up of two vacancies in the JPC, the government should have brought in two separate motions. However, Deputy Chairman, asked for the voice vote and the motion was adopted.

After two adjournments earlier, the chair adjourned the House for the day, when it met again at 2 pm.
