Ahmedabad: Gujarat is at number four in
having ten operational special economic zones (SEZ) while
Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have
more operational SEZs than the western state.
In Andhra Pradesh, 21 SEZs are operational while number
for such SEZs in Maharashtra and Karnataka is 15 each and
Tamil Nadu 19.
These details regarding the state-wise number of SEZs
approved, notified and operational were tabled in Parliament.
As per the details, formal approval have been accorded to
571 proposals out of which 348 SEZs have been notified while
total of 105 SEZs have become operational and are already
exporting.
In Gujarat, so far 48 SEZs have formally been approved
out of which 30 have been notified and 10 have become
operational.
Highest number of SEZs 109 have so far been approved in
Maharashtra out of which 57 have been notified and 15 have
gone into operations.
In Andhra Pradesh, total 102 SEZs are formally approved
while 72 have been notified and 21 have become operational. In
fact, with 21 SEZs into operations, this southern state has
the highest number of operational SEZs in the country.
Karnataka has 52 SEZs out of which 29 have been notified
of which 15 are into operations while another southern state
Tamil Nadu has total 68 approved SEZs, of which 55 have been
notified and 19 have gone into operations.
"Total exports of Rs 99,689 crore were made from SEZs
during the financial year 2008-09 registering a growth of 50
per cent over the exports for the same period of the previous
year," said the government in the details produced in
Parliament.
Exports from SEZs during the first three quarters of the
current financial year have been to the tune of Rs
1,52,092.68 crore registering a growth of about 127 per cent
over the exports for the same period of the previous financial
year.
Analytically speaking, southern and western states
continue to perform better in having higher number of total
SEZs and also operational SEZs compared with other states like
Uttar Pradesh which has only six SEZs operational, Rajasthan
three SEZs and Haryana three SEZs. Punjab has no SEZ into
operations.

of which 15 are into operations while another southern state
Tamil Nadu has total 68 SEZs approved of which 55 have been
notified and 19 have gone into operations.
