New Delhi: India on Monday expressed regret over the Western air strikes in Libya and called for an end to hostilities.

"The need of the hour is cessation of the conflict," External Affairs Minister SM Krishna told reporters here.

He said India viewed with "grave concern the ongoing violence and strife and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Libya”.

"We regret the air strikes that are taking place."

He said the air strikes, mainly by France, Britain and the US, had the potential to "harm innocent civilians, foreign nationals, diplomatic missions and their personnel in Libya.

"India calls upon all parties to abjure violence and the use of threats and force to resolve the differences.

"India believes that all parties should engage themselves in a peaceful dialogue through the United Nations and other regional organisations and come to a settlement."

The minister, however, made it clear that India was in no way siding with Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

He said there was a need to "respect the aspirations of the people of Libya", where a mass revolt erupted last month against the four decades rule of Gaddafi.

Unable to understand India`s stand. The people of Libya want freedom from their tyrant ruler who ruled them for more than four decades. However, Gadaffi wants to break that rebellion has resorted to all cruel tactics to remain in power. If India is not helping the common people in Libya, it should abstain from opposing those who are fighting the pro Gadaffi forces.

Once again USA is flaunting its supermacy by invading Libya like they did with Iraq. They (americans) are blood thirsty race. They have vengeance against one man, but they kill the innocents in the process. Their greed for OIL is creating instability around the world. They are destabilising the normal life of the civilians and the women and the children are the most effected. They (americans) are slowy gaining and setting up their own territory in the middle-east and the gulf. Are we fore-seeing a third world war ?
