Dehradun: A helicopter service to airlift pilgrims to the Chardhams -- Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri -- was on Sunday started in Uttarakhand.

"The service would not only help to promote tourism but also help people to travel four dhams in much less time as well," Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had said at the launch yesterday.

He also lauded the first-ever effort to connect all the four dhams with air-service.

The helicopter being used for Chardham yatra is the six-seater AS350B3 Eurocopter, which can fly at an altitude of 23,000 feet for about three-and-a-half-hours continuously.

"The air service for the four dhams is not a business initiative. It is the group`s commitment to serve the people of the state. This is a social service," Prabhatam Group CEO Rakesh Sharma said.
