Kochi: National Human Rights Commission chairman Justice K G Balakrishnan, on Friday described 'Honour Killings' as a 'great social menace'.

'Honour killings' are shocking incidents and was a great social menace', Justice Balakrishnan told reporters on the sidelines of a seminar here. Only few incidents get reported.

Though existing laws are enough to tackle them, effective police investigation is needed for probing such cases, he said. These are criminal cases. The commission can only create awareness against it, he said.

On the complaint filed to the commission alleging human rights violation in the police raids against activists of the radical outfit, Popular Front of India, which is alleged to have hacked the right hand of a college lecturer, he said the DGP's report was being awaited. Two weeks time has been given and that is the usual procedure.

Complaints are being filed from kerala every week but most of them do not fall under the category of human rights violations, he said.
