New Delhi: Amidst incidents of honour
killings in urban areas, Minister of State for Women and Child
Development Krishna Tirath has written to state governments to
ensure that the writ of law was followed.

"Nobody should take law into their own hands," Tirath
told reporters, adding that she has written to the state
governments to ensure that the law of the land is upheld.

"The law does not have any provision for khap panchayats,"
she added when asked about the caste bodies bent on running
their writ in the rural hinterlands.

On June 14, a young couple was allegedly tortured to
death in Delhi over their affair. The police is treating it as
a case of honour killing.

Several cases have also been reported from Haryana and
Uttar Pradesh.
