Hyderabad: Mohammed Amjad, an alleged LeT
operative and South India chief of terror group HuJI, was sent
to 14-day judicial custody by a local court on Tuesday.
Apprehended yesterday, Amjad alias Khaja was produced
amid high security before Additional Chief Metropolitan
Magistrate which sent him to judicial remand till February 1.
With the arrest of Khaja, a resident of Malakpet here,
Hyderabad Police claimed to have foiled attempts to carry out
major terror strikes in certain South Indian cities ahead of
Republic Day.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Hyderabad
Police filed a petition in the court seeking custodial
interrogation of Khaja for 10 days from January 21 for his
alleged role in the 2005 blast at the Commissioner's Task
Force office here. The SIT plea will be heard on Thursday.
Police claimed 27-year-old Khaja has close links with
terror groups Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Indian Mujahideen,
and was asked by Pakistan's ISI to recruit youth for terror
acts.
Khaja, an accused in attempt to murder of a BJP leader
on a dispute over installing a Ganesh idol here in 2003,
obtained bail in the case and managed to escape to Saudi
Arabia in May 2005.
He was a close aide of Mohammed Abdul Shahed alias
Bilal, killed in a shootout in Pakistan in 2007.
