Husain applies for 'Overseas Citizen' card

Husain applies for `Overseas Citizen` card Dubai: MF Husain may have quit his Indian citizenship, but he does not want to snap his links with the country of his birth and has applied for an Overseas Citizenship identity.

"India is my motherland and I simply cannot leave that country. What I have surrendered is just a piece of paper," Husain, revered by many as India's Picasso, was quoted by the local media as saying, a day after he surrendered his Indian passport in Doha.

"I will continue to travel to India and have applied for an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card as Indian law does not permit its citizens to hold dual citizenship. I'm here to fulfil my professional commitments and I'm grateful that Qatar came to my support," said the 95-year-old painter, whose decision to quit his Indian citizenship has caused dismay and cynicism in equal measures among Indians in the Gulf.

"It's a great loss for the country, especially the so-called secular government, who could not protect a national treasure for exercising freedom of expression," said Jyotika Khemchandani, a marketing professional here.

"It's a shame on Indian democracy. Husain sahib has been denied justice and freedom of expression. Indian government should apologise to him for being ignorant about his security and his rights," said Munawwar Ali Khan, assistant professor of biotechnology at a local university.

However, an official at the Indian embassy, who choose to remain anonymous, expressed regret over the entire episode.

"I have seen some of his controversial paintings on the web. I just don't understand what was the need for him to do such paintings. The entire situation could have been avoided," he said.

Another Indian national, Iftikhar Ahmad, said that Husain's decision should be seen in the context of the hassles he might have faced as a resident in India.

"Qatari citizenship is nothing but an enabling factor to his creative urge and in no way dilutes his Indianness. Artists by nature need patrons and Qatar is good at that," he said.

Asked if the Indian mission had advised him against surrendering his passport in the wake of Home Minister P Chidambaram's recent plea for him to return to his home country, Husain replied in the negative.

"She (Indian ambassador to Qatar Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa) is such a gracious lady. I could read her pain from her face when I surrendered the document," he said.

There is no meaning in proclaiming India as a secular country and therefore anybody can do anything. Secularism means respecting all religion and freedom of faith. It does`nt mean that can you can throw paint on someones sentiments. I have gone through somany paintings of Mr.Hussain. Most of the Hindu Gods he have potrayed in nude and in abnormal sexual acts. All the Muslim charectors are completely coverd in cloth. It clearly indiactes that MR Hussain did not understand Hinduism and therfore he shouild have desisted from making such paintings. If that was his imaginations then do not touch on religion which is very sensitive for human kind. However it is very clear that Mr. Hussains intention was not good. He does not deserve any appreciation on this subject rather deserve condemnation only. He has lost his greateness and misused the gift of art given to him by GOD.

@Invincible kid - United Kingdom For your information in Islam there is no picture of prophets and God. So, there is no question of drawing the painting of prophets or God. In hinduism, there are gods with pictures that is why some artists might draw their pictures. But drawing them nude with the intent of insulting them is totally condemnable. Whether it is M F Hussain or any other artist doing with the intent of insult is totally unacceptable. So do not comment without having proper information. Peace!

This is reply to nassem tayabi. Can u show any other country which is liberal and tolerant like India.U won`t.In caves and temples (Not that much) they have not portrayed any god or goddess that hindus worship. Husain has purposely portrayed hindu deities in objectionable manner purposely.Had it been with muslims,he would have butchered by them.U r talking about stone age.Can u publish Quaran in english or any other language.Or CAN HUSAIN portray prophet Nabi in such a way

Jyotika Khemchandani normally i dont write comments but this one is for you imean people like you. You must be liking that idiot hussain because he is like you. He insulted hindu deities and didnt want people to react. Will he do the same with fellow qataries? let him draw one picture of a qatari lady in nude and i will start praising him. However, you are sindhi like advani neither he cared for his homeland nor u know the value. If, you did you would fight for your motherland sindh rather than claimming to be an indian/

A question to these Islamic Fanatics - when they migrate to the middle east to be closer to their culture, are they integrated into their society or are they set aside as Muhajirs? I have never heard of an instance where an Islamist from India or Pakistan got married with a girl from any of the middle eastern girls. Yet, people like Hussain denigrate Bhartiyas and go and lick the feet of these middle easterns.

Now see naseem shakir tayabi - KUWAIT - you showed what you are - an Islamic Fanatic. What I don`t understand is how you people suddenly became so artistic? Or is it just the hatred for the good Hindus? The idea is to send out all the Hussains and Tayabis and all other Islamic Fanatics to the middle east where they belong. And do not ever come back to our satvik land.
