I love India but country rejected me: MF Husain New Delhi: Political leaders, intellectuals and artists in India kept silent when right-wing outfits targeted him, legendary painter MF Husain says "with deep pain" in his heart.

"I still love India. But India doesn't need me. I am saying this with deep pain in heart," Husain told Gulf Madhyamam, Kerala-based Malayalam daily Madhyamam's Doha edition, in an interview.

"India is my motherland. I can't hate my motherland. But India rejected me. Then why should I stay in India?" the 95-year-old painter said in his first interview after accepting Qatar citizenship.

"When Sangh Parivar outfits targeted me, all kept silent. No one, including political leadership, artists or intellectuals came forward to speak for me. But I know the fact that 90 per cent of the people of India love me. They are with me," he said.

"Only 10 per cent of people, including some politicians, are against me," Husain said.

Husain has dozens of lawsuits against him across the country for his paintings of goddesses that some Hindus find sacrilegious. The artist has been living abroad as a fugitive since 2006.

He said he was not worried, as people across the world love him.

"India's continuing governments could not protect me. So, it is very difficult for me to stay in such a country. Politicians are eyeing only votes."

"Now, they are asking me to come back. I was in exile...There was no one to speak for me. No governments recalled me. Now they are asking me to return after one country offered me citizenship. How can I trust a political leadership that refused to protect me?" he said.

"Is there any surety that I would be given protection in India?" Husain asked.

He stressed that the cases against him went against an artist's self-expression, and maintained that he did not want to hurt anyone's sentiments.

"It is a move against art and the artist's self-expression. I never intended to hurt anyone's sentiments through the art," he said.

"I only expressed my soul's creativity through art. Art's language is universal language. People who love it beyond all narrow viewpoints are my strength," he said.

"I enjoy complete freedom in Qatar. Now Qatar is my place. Here no one controls my freedom of expression. I am very happy here," he said.

Husain added that he would visit India, if he gets the opportunity.

jayaraj - united kingdom..
an artist does have his/her freedom of expression..but he should be considerate to the feelings of others.. he painted the hindu godesses naked... what would have been the trouble if any one had portrayed prophet mohammed that way.....? we all know the economic sanctions the muslim countries imposed on denmark on the mohammed cartoon conrtaversy... and more than 160 people killed in the following violence... hussain is not a fanatic... thats for sure... but if he is dare enough, let him paint prophet mohammed naked... he will then face the music.. now even this `madhyamam` newspaper which has a covert agenda plainly puts the things.. not blaming him... its not the blame game, but the feelings of others..

Even the space to reply he had chosen is contraversial. malayalam daily `Madhyamam` is the mouthpiece of Jamaat e Islami , known for extremist views.

This guy spews so much BS. His lack of respect for feelings of millions of Bhartiyas is apparent.

He says `Only 10 per cent of people, including some politicians, are against me`. Is he a census surveyor now? Where did he get 10 per cent from?

He said he was not worried, as people across the world love him. What gave him that impression?

He then says `Now, they are asking me to come back` - who is asking him to come back to Bharat? The Islamic Terrorists who think their faith reigns supreme over other faiths?

He stressed that the cases against him went against an artist`s self-expression, and maintained that he did not want to hurt anyone`s sentiments. Really??? Did he think that India is an Islamic State where we will tolerate his BS?

The last part is the funniest though - he says `I enjoy complete freedom in Qatar. Now Qatar is my place. Here no one controls my freedom of expression. ` - I offer him to I will pay him 5 paise for a sketch of Mohammed that he will put up in Public Art Gallery in Qatar for display. My only requirement is that I will hand over the money to him only if he is alive after that and not to his next of kin posthumously. By the way, I think 5 paise is way overpriced for his crappy art, but I thought this morally bankrupt excuse for a human being might need it to protect himself in Qatar!!

Person who plays sentiments of millions of people should always be dejected. I am unable to understand why PC is calling him back. If M F Hussain can portray her own wife/mother like Goddess Saraswati, then we can say that he is a artist otherwise he is a person who just want to make fun of others.

A poet write his word which is generated by his heart. Similarly the painter. See, what respect Husain has in mind toward a womanhood especially Hindus woman, Hindu goddess and Hindu culture. You are rejected by our Hindu society. However, there are so many DALALl in Hindu society who are in support of Hussain. I do not know what respect are given to woman in countries where Hussain is/was setteled

Iam an indian Atheist. India has millions of people who are conservative. Drawing nude pictures of some religion`s dieties is foolish as some organizations are always there to exploit situation...Why did mf.hussain draw such pictures again and again eventhough ppl wud demonstrate outside his home..whereas he pulled away gajagamini movie when some muslims complained...If he makes fun of islam in qatar..he will be hacked into pieces..

Listen MF Husain no one loves u in India now after what u have done. U try to do the same with Islam or Mohammad then we will see how they will accept your artistic view and your freedom in Qatar.

India is democratic country and respect all religions but you cross all the limits. U r not a artist but u r mentally sick person. So shut your mouth and live your rest of the life quietly in Qatar.

A nude artist should cross the religion barrier and draw nudes os all women. A good starting point in redemption is to draw ayesha, Fatima and Mary in nude. He can prove his point without any question
