I refused pat-down search at US airport: India`s UN envoy Zeenews Bureau

New York/New Delhi: One of India's top most diplomats, Hardeep Puri, Ambassador to the United Nations, was asked to remove his turban during an airport 'pat-down' search in the US but he refused to oblige, instead opting for another procedure.

Talking to a TV channel, Puri said the incident occurred at the Houston Airport on November 13 when he was asked by authorities at the airport to remove his turban for ‘pat-down’ check, but he refused.

“I told them I wanted to opt for another procedure where a passenger could pat down his own turban…but they were not aware of this,” he said.

All of this took about half an hour when I was kept in a ‘holding room’, after which they apologised to me, Puri added. India has lodged a strong protest following the incident.

The incident comes close on the heels of Indian Ambassador to the US Meera Shankar being subjected to a 'pat-down' search earlier this month. The US deputy chief of mission in India, Donald Lu, was summoned by New Delhi to protest against the incident two days back.

India has lodged an official protest with US authorities through its Consulate General in Houston, sources said in New Delhi.

"I have taken it up with the US authorities and the matter is at that stage. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also give an indication to the fact that they have to revisit some of these procedures, particularly with reference to diplomatic cover of other countries," External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said in New Delhi when asked about these searches.

Former Indian diplomats have reacted to the latest incident by pointing out that there should be reciprocal treatment of foreign envoys in India. "The issue is not just of diplomats, but also of our Sikh brethren, whose issue we had taken up several times," former Indian ambassador to US, Ronen Sen told a television channel.

He said the security check of Puri's turban violated the reassurances given by US authorities on sensitivity in handling religious symbols during checks. "We had explained to them that a pagri (turban) that a Sikh wears is not a headgear. It is a religious symbol, which should be treated with respect," said Sen.

On December 4, Shankar was pulled out from an airport security line and patted down by an American security agent in Mississippi despite informing them of her diplomatic status.

Shankar was subjected to an enhanced security pat-down at the Jackson-Evers International Airport in Mississippi, ostensibly because she was dressed in a sari.

In the past, many prominent Indians, including ministers, have faced some uncomfortable moments at US airports.

In September, visiting Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel was quizzed by US immigration authorities at the O'Hare airport in Chicago after his name and date of birth matched with that of another Praful Patel, who is on America's watch-list.

In August 2009, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was detained and questioned at the Newark Liberty International Airport. Khan was headed to Chicago for a parade to celebrate India's Independence Day, when he was pulled aside by airport authorities for interrogation.

Former Defence Minister George Fernandes had claimed that he was strip-searched twice at Dulles Airport in the US Capital area, when he was on an official visit to Washington in early 2002 and another time while en route to Brazil in mid 2003.

Its not about the security check or security norms. The American officials have a point to prove that they are the best goons when it comes to them.Don`t they know the protocol for diplomats or diplomatic passports. They surely do but the problem lies with our impotent system and politicians who don`t have a backbone to react to any disgraceful incident of this kind. Just lodging protest, will this be enough for them to understand their wrongdoings. Not at all, unless they are not reciprocated the taste of this humiliation they will not realize what they are doing to others.I think we need to pay them back in the same way to make them realize our protest.

This regarding the comments of Deep Basu. He seems to be a mad person. He is not aware of the immunity being enjoyed by Americans etc when they visit other cuntries. They think themselves not only super human beings but they theink themselves GOD. They park their cars in the middle of roads all over India and other countries but when diplomats f other countries park their car in vacant spaces, they are challaned because of non-parking spaces. These all matters show how the stupid they are. However, concerned officials in developing countries fear to touch diplomats of advance/developed countries because of non-support of their own bosses. If someone has gutts all procedures should be exactly reciprocated, then only these hot headed people will come to their senses.

ok.. why dont any one strip search our US president or presidents of any nation for that matter.. they too are humans.. they too can cause threat..

Be sensible, Being a diplomat is a highly valued and respectable position...Terrorists can by no chance become diplomats.

Secondly, does any of those who ``feel ashamed to be indian`` or ``does look down on Indians``, know the value of a Pagdi.. if they had tried to know, they would by no chance raise such a comment... and would never in their life remove it from their head.

It appears that the US is either paranoid about security, alternatively this is a deliberate action to convey something internationally. Another logical conclusion can be that there is a serious lack of human judgemental faculty by the security personnel involved, that they follow their security procedures mechanically. It questions ground level leadership issues, which could possibly have a detremental affect on the overall security. High time situations got viewed in a more realistic manner. Indians, by nature are intelligent enough to percieve such actions.

David Hadley travelled on US passport when he visited India. Please give `special` search treatment for US citizens including deplomats. We have to be careful for our security, while they take care of themselves.

The root cause of this security issues is because of the terrorists. And the terrorists are MUSLIMs. So instead of harassing all only MUSLIMs need extra security procedures. Send MUSLIMs only for harsh check and leave every one alone.

Of late ,this sort of news is heard very often. One must basically understand that security is for all and everybody must be safe either on the ground or on flight.Hence security rules must be uniform throughout the world`s air travel corporations irrespective of any designations held by any travellers. There need not be any resevations in this regard. Higher designted passengers should rather come forward voluntarily and ask the security staff to carry out their duty as a normal procedure thus setting an example to others who have some inhibitions. We should not attribute any other ``isms`` for this . It is high time for all the countries` governments and pass a resolution to this effect

All this whining is for little girls. Be a man Sardarji. When I was coming back from India they practically removed everything from my suitcase and spread it all over. After search they even had dogs sniff it, how ridiculous. And when I was halfway to the airplane boarding one idiot security grabbed me and started pulling my hand luggage and said it looks heavy. I was furious, and said you guys just checked it SOB. Well they let go of it. But talk about ill prepared, untrained security there. At least here I am sure everything is per their procedure and strictly enforced on all. Terrorist have long reach and even the diplomats can be one of them. There is no `Chalta Hai yaar` system here.
